Bunnymonster: Hand made toys from the mind of the strange.

For the last 2 years I have spasmodically been making strange little toys. Bunny Monster, the first of these,  was created one winters night during a 'craftanoon' that ran a little late and included a few too many bottles of wine. He is the name sake of the "Bunnymonster: Hand made toys from the mind of the strange" label.

I told a friend "This is where scraps go to die. . . But instead are re-born into things that scare small children. They make themselves, they just use my hands to do it." and indeed they do. These little creatures pop into being after a vague, fuzzy edged idea that is formed after finding a particular odd button, a strange zipper or a previously undiscovered shred of material at the bottom of the sewing bag.

The newest addition to the Bunnymonster line of 'frightening things to play with' are the stars of the new adult short animation The Confession of Father John Thomas which premiered at the 2011 Byron Bay Film Festival.

"In the heart of the Australian outback lives Father John Thomas. During one of his “seemingly” innocent confessionals he is caught out by God who pushes him to reveal his true self. Along with the filthy fantasies of fellow sinner Miss Beaver Eater, he finally gets the balls to confess."

Father John and Miss Beaver Eater are a little different from other 'bunnymonsters'.  They are made of felt instead of what ever scrap cloth I have lying around, and follow a set design (provided by the lovely animators themselves) rather than being created as I go. Also, they like to go shopping. . .

While they are much cuter than the 'normal' Bunnymonsters, they are just as disturbing (in a good way) for, if  no other reason, I can now say I have made toy genitals with faces! :)

If you get a chance to see The Confession of Father John Thomas take it with gusto. It is a wonderful showcase of Australian animation!

In the mean time, I think I'll be on the look out for odd buttons and strange zippers.

E.C.
